Sumatra aka Houdini

Sumatra attacking
one of their toys in her frustration!

Sumatra is one of Tiny Dancer's grandbabies ... she is seven weeks old.

Little "Sumatra" tickled my funnybone this morning, and I just had to share it.  I have a puppy fence (the kind folks put outside to contain pups yet lets them romp - it's large).  I've put that around the two whelping pens and secured it to the backside of both of them on either side, so they have their little beds, yet can come out and romp without getting into any harm (during the day when someone's here).

A few moments ago I was sitting here responding to some email, and suddenly here's Sumatra, wiggling her tiny butt around my feet, happy as a little sunbeam.  Whaaa????  I look over at the pen; all the babies are either munching on their puppy biscuits or playing with toys and each other.  I'm confused.  I walk over to the pen area and check to ensure that everything is escape and puppy-proof.  Nothing's amiss, so I chalk it up to ... whatever.  I talk with my little wiggler, kiss her and snuggle her, and put her back with her friends.

I'm again doing my "homework" on the computer ... two minutes later my toes are being nibbled on ... by Sumatra!!!!  Okay.  Now I'm perplexed and realize that this baby is one that has inherited her grand mommy’s higher intelligence and will bear watching!  Again I snuggle her and kiss her, blow bubbles on her belly until she squirms ... and put her back in.  Then I sit at my computer and watch her.  She watches me back.  We do this for perhaps five minutes.  I turn back to my computer, and I see her move out of the corner of my eye so I swivel back to watch her.  She sits down - kerplunk - and watches me with that sweet little face.  Hmmm. I swivel back most of the way, but am able to see a little out of the corner of my eye.  She watches me for another minute, then dashes to the back of her whelping pen ... I swivel around and see her emerging from the back.  There is about a 2" gap where I'd moved the pen out last night when I was mopping the floor and just hadn't moved it all the way back.  She found it and discovered that if she wiggled her little body in just the right way, she could make it through the gap and into freedom!  I kissed her and laughed at her, then put her back and fixed the problem area.  She immediately sat down to watch me.  I returned to my computer and watched out of the corner of my eye as she jumped to the "escape area" again.  Ooopppss!  She tried for several moments to get through the now-closed opening ... then returned to the front and sat down and proceeded to bark at me!  I guess I've been told that I'M the one in the dog house now!

Little Sumatra now lives in California with her daddy Bob and her mommy Melanie and her half-brother, Java.
